The Alliance Community Fellowship (ACF) Networking Board is an online directory, a voluntary website of individuals, businesses, institutions, and groups who share a desire to connect with like-minded people in the world of work or general networking opportunities. While the vast majority of people are honest and professional, the few bad ones get the most attention and cause people to be cautious when hiring out work. There are no guarantees; that because you found a business contact on the ACF Networking Board, that you will have a positive experience. We certainly pray that is the case, but let’s review a few “Do’s and Don’ts” to assist you in having a good business experience.
Whether you are hiring a painter, remodeling your house, getting work done on your car, having your computer repaired, or buying Avon; there are some “Do’s and Don’ts” when you are hiring services out, or conducting business amongst friends that you should consider.
Do:
- Ask for a Certificate of Insurance
- Ask for References
- Get estimates in writing, ALWAYS!
- Check with the Better Business Bureau
- Have a Signed Contract from both parties
- Schedule a specific time for a meeting to discuss the work
- Express all needs and expectations up front
- Ensure that all questions are answered to your satisfaction
- Ask questions and expect detailed answers
- If the services are from a contractor, ask them to show Permits if necessary
Don't:
- Begin work without a signed written estimate
- Hire a contractor based on price alone
- Pay for a contract in-full up-front
- Be afraid to ask questions at any stage
- Be intimidated
- Forget this is business and you are the customer
- Take advantage of each other
- Hire someone you feel uncomfortable about
- Allow additional work without a written change order
